Gaining Ground in Urban Markets

5th Jun '09

In an admittedly tough publishing economy, Baker Publishing Group has recently seen evidence that cultivating titles specifically with the Urban market in mind is starting to pay off. Among the inroads the company has made are the following news items:

The 2009 African American Pavilion at BookExpo America recently announced that Baker Publishing Group is the recipient of The 2009 African American Pavilion at BookExpo America, "Christian Book Publisher of the Year" Award. The awards presentation was held Saturday, May 30, 2009, 3-5pm, at The 2009 African American Pavilion at BookExpo America Reception and Awards Program, John Jacob Javits Convention Center, New York City.

Unsigned Hype, the debut YA novel from Booker T. Mattison, has already received reviews from African American Family (Detroit), Black Beat magazine, and Library Journal, which proclaims that the book "flashes strong street cred and fills a void for teen readers seeking fiction that is not quite as raw as adult street lit. Firmly rooted in hip-hop lore, it will have huge appeal for urban teens and belongs in all metropolitan libraries' YA and Christian fiction collections."  Unsigned Hype publishes in the UK in July 09. The Someday List, which published here in April has also received very positive responses, and the author's new book Worth a Thousand Words is due out in July.

Gods Word Translation available to Kindle users

9th Apr '09

We are pleased to announce that the Holy Bible, GOD'S WORD Translation (GW) is available to download for all Kindle and Kindle 2 users. You can find and download GOD'S WORD Translation by searching on "GOD'S WORD Translation" in the Kindle Store.

Here are a selection of endorsements from Christian leaders.
"GOD'S WORD is an easy-to-understand Bible. . . . It is a wonderful version." --Rev. Billy Graham
"GOD'S WORD is a remarkably fresh, accurate, and readable translation that communicates well the original text for modern readers. Based on a sound linguistic approach, this new translation is an outstanding achievement." --Dr. David Dockery
"This new Bible translation, GOD'S WORD, strives to interpret passages for the American reader without changing the original Hebrew meaning of the text. The English language is constantly changing. It is time, and vitally important, to bring Bible translations up-to-date. The Old Testament portion of GOD'S WORD ranks among the best." --Dr. Menahem Mansoor
"GOD'S WORD is very possibly the most accurate English translation of the original text available today. GOD'S WORD is a must-read for twenty-first century Christians." --Dr. Larry Richards
"I am greatly impressed! I couldn't put GOD'S WORD down. It certainly is the most readable English translation I've read. I predict it will become a standard text. I believe GOD'S WORD will enrich the study habits of a whole generation." --Dr. Joe C. Aldrich
"The Bible is the means God has chosen to reach out in human language, reveal the essence of his relational heart, and relate the Good News of his redemptive plan. GOD'S WORD Translation presents that message in a way that makes sense to readers of all ages. It is an accurate translation using modern English language and phraseology which makes it easier to understand." --Josh McDowell

Preaching to a Post-Everything World wins PreachingToday.com award

27th Jan '09

Each year PreachingToday.com names two preaching books of the year: one focused on the preacher's skills and the other on the preacher's soul. Preaching to a Post-Everything World is the winner of the skills category. The award winners were chosen by votes from two preaching experts and the editor of PreachingToday.com.

PreachingToday.com is a resource of Christianity Today International and has been in existence since 1999. The site is dedicated to inspiring preachers and elevating the level of preaching in the English-speaking world. PreachingToday.com is a subscription site that posts over 360 fresh sermon illustrations every year in its searchable database, as well as articles about preaching, sermons and sermon series, and audio sermons.

Here is the comment of one of the judges on the book:

"Eswine wrestles deeply with the question, 'Can I now preach to the kind of person I once was?' Eswine is keenly sensitive to the culture and deeply committed to the gospel. A lot of preaching sacrifices one or the other. But his book shows promise in helping preachers engage the culture through biblical exposition. Eswine's book will help us refine our thinking and our homiletical methodology so that we can substantially improve our ability to connect biblical truth to the non-churched in the culture around us."
